NEW RULES FOR PROSECCO
AUGUST 1ST, 2009

Find below the most important new rules for Prosecco, which came into force on August 1st, 2009.

Prosecco IGT will not longer exist: no winery will furthermore produce or sell it. Old IGT stocks may still be sold until December 31st, 2010.

There are only 2 sorts of Prosecco:

·         Prosecco DOC (formerly IGT) will only be produced in the following regions of Veneto and Friuli: Treviso, Trieste, Gorizia, Belluno, Padova, Venezia, Vicenza, Udine and Pordenone.

·         Prosecco DOCG (formerly DOC) will only be produced in the regions of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Asolo.

The new cultivation rules are as follows:

·         The DOC yield/ha will be reduced from 25 tons (formerly IGT) to approximately 13,5 tons, which entails a drastic increase of the production costs.

·         The DOCG yield/ha remains at approximately 13,5 tons.

·         In case of a surplus production (for DOC and DOCG) of less than 20%, it will be downgraded to „GLERA“. In case of a surplus production of more than 20%, the whole vintage has to be downgraded.
(Quantities may differ from region to region.)

Rules concerning production and bottling:

·         Prosecco DOC is only allowed to be produced in the above named regions. There are two exceptions:

o        For producers from the neighbouring regions, assumed they can proove that they produce and bottle Prosecco since 2004.
o        For producers from other regions, assumed they can proove that they produce and bottle Prosecco since 1986.

·         Prosecco DOCG may only be bottled in the Treviso region.

·         It is allowed to blend Prosecco DOC with max. 15% of other grapes (like Pinot Bianco, Grigio, Nero, Chardonnay, etc.), assumed the grapes were grown in the same DOC or DOCG areas. That was not allowed up to now.

·         It is not longer allowed to blend Prosecco DOC and DOCG with aroma varieties (like Moscato, Malvasia etc).

·         Every filling lot has to be made available to the chamber of commerce for analysis. The filling is only allowed to be sold after the chamber of commerce has agreed.

The production rules for Grappa made of Prosecco grapes remain unchanged. Only the label designation has changed:

GRAPPA DA UVE DELLA DOC PROSECCO
(Grappa made of grapes from DOC Prosecco)
or
GRAPPA PROSECCO
or
GRAPPA DA PROSECCO

Other names are not allowed.

Wine & Food - Boizel Rosé + Truffle Butter

Christmas, New Year in fact … “The “ Party season, has arrived! I believe that many of you might be anticipating opening a bottle of your special wine or Champagne for this holiday season. So for this newsletter I would like to introduce truffle butter, which raises a finger food to another level.

In fact, truffle butter is the specialty of world famous chef Tetsuya Wakuda, based in Sydney. His black truffle salsa can now be purchased on line in Japan (http://shop.gnavi.co.jp/Mall2/1295/237687.html). Mix 40 grams of the salsa with 160 grams of non-salted butter and 25 grams of parmesano reggiano and presto, truffle butter!

Simple! You can enjoy the tasty butter by simply spreading it on a cracker or toast, though I recommend adding it to the mashed potatoes.

Black truffle has strong earthy aromas, which go well with red wines. If you would like to pair it with Champagne please choose rosé. More matured rosé will contribute to a greater marriage.

Champagne Boizel rosé, without mentioning its beautiful taste or its dazzling color, a pale salmon pink adds a seasonal touch, when combined with a truffle butter canapé, and will make your precious time easier to savor!

Letter from the Winery - Château Angelus

First impression of the 2009

The wines are very dark. They have a very pure nose with ripe fruits flavors but not jammy. On the palate they display very fresh raspberry, red berries and black berries flavors. The mouth offers a nice concentration and opulence. Not heavy. Full bodied and lots of silky tannins and very well balanced. Wines are powerful, concentrated but subtle with verve.

Regarding my father: “It’s true that the acidity is low but it’s the candidate of the great vintages: 61 and 82. Even if what we read compares 09 with 05, 03 or 89 it’s a very different vintage. Everything looks like 1982 adding the viticulture hand and the vineyard experience.”

2007 Château Mouton Rothschild - Art label

2007 Château Mouton Rothschild - Art label

As you might know the world famous Château Mouton Rothschild commissions a major contemporary artist every year to create an original picture for their label.  For the 2007 vintage Mr. Bernar Venet, a French contemporary conceptual artist, was selected.  Actually on the label his monument “Arc” was depicted, symbolizing perhaps the perfect balance that Mouton wine possesses… At least I could say that the uniting of Venet’s great work and great wine creates another unique art piece. Without doubt it will attract a great deal of attention from collectors around the world.

Grade of German Wine - Beerenauslese

Beerenauslese
Beerenauslese means “Overripe berries (Beeren)” and “harvest of individually selected (auslese)” in German. Those wines literally made from berries picked very carefully are luscious, sweet and truly noble.

Forevermark Diamond Night”

In commemoration of 3rd issue “ELLE Marriage” the magazine held a “Forevermark Diamond Night” on Wednesday, 18th of November at ARFERIQUE Shirokane. For all the participants we offered a piccolo of Fürst von Metternich as an aperitif. By attaching a mouthpiece you can drink directly from the piccolo bottle in a stylish fashion. Because of the convenient size and stylish package the German sekt was an instant success with the guests, and contributed to living the party. At the lottery our wines were also offered as a prize.

RIEDEL glass lecture by Mr. Georg Riedel

On Friday, 27th of November a seminar was conducted by Mr. Georg Riedel, owner of RIEDEL, for our staff at Pieroth Tokyo office. Participants tasted three types of wines by using “vinum XL”, the new glass series, and learned how important it is to choose the right glass for each wine, by experiencing that taste and seeing how the character of the wine changes depending on its shape of the glass. At last Mr. Riedel picked up a very interesting shaped decanter from their collection, and demonstrated how it works.

If you hold a glass horizontally you can see the shape how wine in the glass flows into your mouth.
