Character

Sagittarians are one of the most optimistic zodiac signs of all. Like
their astrological symbol - the Archer - Sagittarians are renowned for
aiming their sights towards whatever it is they find alluring - a love
partner, dream job, vacation - and making it their own. They believe
that anything

is possible, and because of this belief system,
Sagittarians are adept at seeking out their very own pot of gold at
the end of the rainbow.

Sagittarians are happiest on the move - exploring new cultures and
ideas and many are attracted to occupations related to travel, the
media, outdoor work and philosophical pursuits.

Freedom loving, optimistic and honest, Sagittarians are ruled by
Jupiter, the planet of abundance and higher learning. Although they
are intellectually and spiritually advanced, Sagittarians are
notorious for their lack of tact. In relationships they demand
independence, but when in love, it can't be denied that they are one
of the most big-hearted signs of the zodiac.

When it comes to wine, Sagittarians know how to differentiate quality.

Another reason why they love to travel to famous wine-growing
countries, such as South Africa or Australia, where they want to learn
more about the local wine-growing techniques.

When Sagittarians wind down and put down roots, they enjoy visiting
traditional wine markets or open days at their favourite wineries.
Here they can take it easy and fully live out their passion for wine –
tasting, comparing and handpicking to fill up their cellar.

Whitehaven Duo in Top 100 – Sydney International Wine Competition 2012

Leading Marlborough wine company Whitehaven has again achieved impressive results in a major international wine competition. The Sydney International Wine Competition 2012 judges, chaired by New Zealand’s Kym Milne MW, have selected both Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2011 and Whitehaven ‘Greg’ Pinot Noir 2009 in the Top 100, the highest pointed wines from a field of 2000 international entries.

The Top 100 selection represents the highest scoring wines (top 5%) entitled to carry the competition’s highly regarded marque – a Double Gold Medal.
‘Respected international wine competitions are an ideal way to benchmark your portfolio. The judging panel feedback is invaluable, as of course are any resulting Gold Medals,’ commented Sue White, Managing Director of Whitehaven.
‘The Sydney International Competition is unique in that the final selection wines are judged with food, mirroring the circumstances in which most wines are poured. To have both Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc and the reserve tier Greg Series Pinot Noir in the Top 100 is an endorsement of our winemaking style and the focus of winemaker Sam Smail.’ Whitehaven ‘Greg’ Pinot Noir is crafted from select parcels of hand-picked grapes sourced from dedicated growers in the Ben Morven, Wairau and Brancott Valleys, a silky supple pinot that signposts Marlborough as an ideal New World region for the classic Burgundian variety.
Both winning wines were made by chief winemaker Sam Smail who has worked with the company for over a decade. His Whitehaven Pinot Gris 2009 was also Highly Commended in the competition.
The Sydney International Wine Competition, now in its 31st year, will announce the Trophy Awards in Sydney on 25 February 2012.
Whitehaven is a Renwick-based winery focussed on building export markets, notably in the USA and Australia, also the UK, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan and Hong Kong.
All wines are currently available to on- and off-premise trade stockists in New Zealand.

Winery of the Month

It was only 10 years ago that we began our collaboration with the renowned wine consultant Paul Hobbs. Our aim was to produce wines in the “world class style” and compete in the international markets. The project demanded hard work for the PT team and a dedication and commitment from Paul Hobbs.
A shared passion for detail and a striving for excellence in standards brought us together on this project. Today we are proud to state that we have achieved superlative wines.

Over the years, we have launched 5 ranges of wine which have become very successful around the world.

Wine & Food -

H de l’Hospitalet Rose & Cigalus Blanc

This month, I would like to introduce the food matching with H de l’Hospitalet and Cigalus Blanc, both of which are listed in our brand-new catalogue: Winter Best Selection 2011/2012

Purple & Orange Tomatoes + H de l’Hospitalet Rose

My friend who lives in London once told me that she grows purple tomatoes in her backyard. Since then, I had been looking for a place in Japan where purple tomatoes are sold. Luckily, I managed to find them in Kinokuniya Supermarket in Aoyama! I found the name “Toscana Violet” very romantic. The package says that  it has the melting texture like grapes, but when I actually tasted them,  I found that the skin was very thin with slight sweetness.
You do not need sauce or anything with these tomatoes.Just tomatoes themselvesand Rose of Gerard Bertrand produces such a perfect combination. The sweetness of tomatoes and wines are very similar and the gentle sweetness of the tomato goes well with this softy-colored rose with subtle palate.

The orange tomatoes sitting next to the purple tomatoes caught my eyes with its beauty and even lured me to buy them, though I did not intend to. I also like the lovely name “Piccola Canaria.” On the package, it says “tantalizing with highly-concentrated sweetness.” It was so true. I could taste the strong sweetness, but it had sourness as well. The skin was a bit thicker than the purple tomatoes. I thought the flavor would overwhelm the rose wine, so I spread guacamole. Avocado goes well with rose wines. Here, avocado gave a masking effect which toned down the original flavor of the tomatoes.Enjoy these colorful tomatoes as an appetizer and Bertrand’s rose with it.

Salt-Flavored Tomato Snack + Bertrand Cigalus Blanc

I accidentally came across this salt-flavored tomato snack when I was shopping in Kinokuniya Supermarket the other day. This is a perfect snack with wines.
Well-ripen tomatoes go well with rose or oaky medium-bodied whites. This snack is made frying grape tomatoes and this has malt sugar in its ingredient. Medium- bodied white that clearly reveals oakness would match very well with this snack.
Then, a question arose in my mind; which white? I wondered for a second, but a perfect answer hit me right away. A new face, Cigalus Blanc from Gerard Bertrand, is the answer. Please enjoy the marriage of this tomato snacks and Cigalus Blanc while waiting for a main dish.
For main dish, I would like to recommend this dish; flavor pork loin with salt and let it sit in fridge for 4 days, saute it with garlic. With mashed potatoes and stir-fried vegetables on the side, you will surely have another glass of wine.
