November 19th Nouveau Day! Time to Reserve

Nouveau an Old Tradition. From time immemorial, people looked forward to drinking the fresh new wine with great anticipation. In fact during the Middle Ages it was typically sold two weeks after the harvest, by the landowners who were frequently lords, bishops, or abbots forerunners in a sense of the first wine merchants.

Age of Enlightment. Originally wine was drunk and relished as new or 'nouveau' wine as methods of preserving and protecting wine were very basic and many wines oxidized and quickly turned to vinegar. It was not until the end of the 19th century with Pasteur's and the application of the Scientific Revolution to the wine industry did things start to change.

Back to the fifties. Drinking Beaujolais Nouveau as we know it today was reinvented in 1951. However a French government degree prohibits the release of the wine before the 3rd Thursday of November of the year of vintage. Today this style of Beaujolais accounts for approximately 40% of the regions production with Japan as the most significant importer

To ensure you get your Beaujolais straight off the airplane on time for the BIG day Nov 19th, Pieroth is now taking your orders. For details please click here.

En Primeur Report By J.K. Whelehan                                                                Introdution

The concept of the en primeur, is that the cask samples are tasted in April, they are subsequently released for sale typically in May and June through brokers and negotiants practically two years prior to their bottling and delivery, with an expected appreciation in value.

The following tasting notes were made during the en primeur and therefore are not precise notes and should be used more as a guideline.  In particular when consider these were not finished wines, the number of wine tasted and tasting order etc.

2010 is heralded as another great vintage however it has it own unique character.  Similar to the 2009 the wines in general have a deep color.  But the tannins in general are more formidable then the 2009, giving very firm mouth gripping wines.  However these tannins in general are kept in check by the ripe fruit and in particular the good acidities you will find in many of the wines across the region.  Finally some wines are in fact quite high in alcohol which depending on the wine can work for or against it.

The following tasting notes were made during the en premieur and you have to consider these were not finished wines, the number of wine tasted and tasting order etc. but they should act as good guideline. Reviewing the wines the fruit for me was one of the most important factors, i.e. there must be enough fruit at the end to balance the tannins. While initial expectations were low based on  reports received from various sources and indeed there was some green or unripe characteristics in some of the wines. However more commonly they were pleasantly aromatic wines, which were light and smooth on the palate with integrated tannins, relatively low alcohol and acidity. And as stated initially best suited to early consumption.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The wine from this region seemed to be overall consistent and homogenous there was nothing bad but with some outsatnding wines. In genearl powerful wines with deep colors and higher in alcohol versus 2009 but despite this because of the high aciditys and low phs the wines still seem balanced.
