Good rainfall in winter helped to reconstitute water reserves in the soil. After a cold February, when average temperatures were 1.5° C lower than in a normal year, March was mild.
Budbreak began on 28 March with the Syrah and ended with the Cabernet Sauvignon on 10 April, normal dates for the estate.
April and May were warm, with average temperatures 1° C higher than normal. April was wet but May was dry, with only 12 mm of rain.
These conditions caused flowering to take place early, between 26 May and 7 June.
June and July were hot (average temperatures were 1.5° C higher than normal), with the usual amount of rainfall. The grapes started to change colour early, beginning on 22 July with the Merlot and ending on 14 August with the Cabernet Franc, ten days before the average veraison date.
Conditions in August and early September allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and in excellent health. The harvest took place in very good conditions, ending 14 days earlier than in an average year.
Grapes: Merlot 57%, Cabernet Franc 15%, Syrah 13%, Malbec 11%, Cabernet Sauvignon 4%
Maturing: 12 months in French oak barrels, 25% new barrels, 75% one- to three-year-old barrels
The wine has a deep, dense colour with a garnet tint. The nose reveals a wide array of aromas, opening on intense black fruit such as blackberry and bilberry together with herby garrigue notes, then developing touches of mild spice and liquorice. The dense and concentrated attack gives way to a well-integrated and succulent mid-palate underpinned by refined, silky tannins, with balsamic, chocolate and liquorice notes contributing to the overall harmony. The finish is fresh and harmonious on a range of black fruit and incense flavours which linger long on the palate.
