Germany has a world wide reputation for its white wines especially those from the Riesling grape. Germany represents nearly two thirds of the worldwide Riesling production, located between the 48th and 51st parallel of northern hemisphere. At the end of the 19th century German Rieslings from the Rhine and Mosel were the most expensive wines in the world, commanding prices higher than those of the top Bordeaux growths. Although the quality of the finest wines remained high, the fall from zenith to nadir took less than 50 years. In the German market many estates only sell mainly dry wines; on the export markets, nothing but delicately sweet Spätlese and Auslese. Those extremely refined wines are without any doubt unique in the world of wine and merit the same appreciation as hundred years ago.
