'The history of the wines of Madrid dates back to the beginning of the XIII century, which means that the denomination ‘Vinos de Madrid’ is the result of an old vine growing tradition in Madrid.
The Denomination of Origin Vinos de Madrid was founded in 1990 and covers, controls and protects the grapes and wines from 54 municipalities located in the south area of the province of Madrid. The production area is divided in 3 sub-areas: Arganda, San Martín de Valdeiglesias and Navalcarnero.
Since the beginning of the 90s the wines of Madrid have improved their image spectacularly. The wineries became aware of the need for offering wines with a good quality-price relationship and the effort is transmitted immediately to consumers. The most direct consequence is the more outstanding presence of the wines of Madrid not only in the national market but also with success at International level.
The grape varieties used for the elaboration of the wines of D.O. Vinos de
Madrid are Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz for the red wines and Malvar (typical grape of the region Madrid) and Airén for the white wines.'
