DO RIBERA DEL DUERO: THE SPANISH “BURGUNDY”
A few years ago, no one would have imagined the current popularity of wines produced in Ribera del Duero, an Appellation d’Origine that includes what many call the “Spanish Burgundy”. Now, the general indifference felt some years ago for these wines, produced in a region offering excellent conditions for vine-growing, is a thing of the past and their recognition and esteem at an international level are growing apace.
Although there is no doubt some truth in the saying “if the land is good the wine is good”, the success enjoyed by the Ribera del Duero region is largely due to the work of a group of entrepreneurs, determined to reveal the excellence of the wines produced in this region to the world at large.
Processed mainly with the Tinto Fino or Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties, the wines of Ribera del Duero represent, like few others, the “vins d’auteur” concept, which implies very personal, singular wins, in which quality and personality dominate over all other considerations.
