En Primeur 2020

Remarkable dry white wines and very successful, expressive, soft and delicious red wines

The 2019 vintage produced dazzling dry white wines. Their aromas are intense and attractive, dominated by grapefruit, mango, and lemon notes, characteristic of ripe Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is fresh on the palate, with Sémillon contributing a smooth, full-bodied texture, culminating in hints of tropical fruit on the finish. A great year for dry white wines!

The wines of Sauternes, made from a drastic selection of grapes, are perfectly precise and aromatic. They are fresh, well-balanced, delicious and in no way heavy on the palate. The aftertaste is equally refreshing and flavoursome.

As in 2018, the Merlots appear to be a great success. They are expressive wines, marked by cherry, blackberry and fresh plum aromas. Smooth on the palate, they already reveal melt-in-the-mouth tannins. Rainfall in late September were often welcomed by winegrowers, making it possible to reach phenolic and aromatic ripeness. It is also worth noting that this vintage reflects the growing trend to produce grapes with increased sugar levels. In most cases, the excellent balance of flavours does not seem to have been affected by the resulting higher alcohol content, although particular care and attention was required when completing alcoholic fermentation. This observation should lead to a reflection on the influence of vineyard operations and their adaptation to climate change. Furthermore, the generally higher acidity, compared to the 2018 vintage, results in a more classic style of wine.

Particularly sensitive to drought, Petit Verdot sometimes suffered from excessive water stress on the most well-drained soils. Certain batches have lost their usual charm.

Meanwhile, the Cabernets, which benefited from favourable conditions at the end of the season, were picked in good condition, at peak ripeness. While they may lack the concentration of outstanding vintages throughout the region, they are nevertheless bursting with fruitiness, accompanied by a fine tannic structure. Once again, the finest deep gravel terroirs produced outstanding results.  (Taken from "The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux by  Professor Laurence GENY and Dr. Axel MARCHAL, Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences of Bordeaux University, Oenological Research Unit.)

Finally to put it into context,  "the wines I have tasted so far from 2019 seem good to excellent and comparable in quality to 2018, 2016 and 2015 – all excellent vintages."  by James Suckling

<Pessac Leognan>

Château Haut Brion Blanc

Blanc 64.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 35.6% Semillon.

The color is pale yellow, beautiful. The first nose is intense, marked by sauvignon, airy but ripe, delicate and fresh. When agitated, the impression of "densification" and complexity is incredible: the semillon behaves, without a doubt, like an aroma enhancer. The entry on the palate is full, tasty and fragrant. Then, the wine stretches over a fantastic length, without weakening and reveals spicy flavors. One of the most beautiful Haut-Brion white very close to 2017 and without doubt a future 1993, one of the most beautiful successes of recent years.

Château Haut Brion

Rouge 48.7% Merlot, 43.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.1% Cabernet Franc.

Superb deep purple red color. The first nose is intense and subtle at the same time. The fruit is ripe and the agitation reveals the aromatic complexity of this wine. The wine has an incredible attack of sweetness and delicacy. Then, it unfolds by filling the mouth, without ever "showing the muscles". The tannins are tight without harshness, subtle and bewitching. The finish is long, fragrant.

Château La Mission Haut Brion

Rouge 53% Merlot, 39.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.5% Cabernet Franc.

The wine has a very beautiful deep purple red color. The nose is intense, with notes of raspberry and blackberry. What is striking is the full maturity of the fruit. The vanilla and delicately spicy oak does not dominate and accompanies perfectly. The entry in the mouth is round, fleshy and full. The wine evolves, tasty in the middle of the mouth. Black fruits and liquorice dominate the taste. The tannic structure then appears juicy and velvety. Since the beginning of barrel aging, this incredible charming wine has only progressed and immediately reminds us of the great 2000 vintage but with more density.

This wine is a lovely pale-yellow colour. The nose is very expressive, revealing very fresh citrus (grapefruit) notes, alongside ripe yellow fruit (peach, apricot, mango), as well as floral and spicy overtones (elderflower, star anise) coming to the fore, enhancing aromatic complexity. Starts out tight on the palate, becoming concentrated, powerful and rich. The overall impression is a polished wine with wonderful acidity. It has great length, underscored by superb balance between acidity and concentration, and a very soft texture. Yellow fruit and citrus aromas follow through to the palate, underpinned by incredibly complex spices and white flower notes.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Rouge – 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot , 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

This wine is a very dark red, almost black colour. The bouquet is expressive, with black fruit notes (blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry) accompanied by cherry overtones. Complex spicy aromas then come to the fore (clove, cinnamon, liquorice), underscored by subtle hints of gun flint, very emblematic of the Graves terroir. A rather "approachable" wine, powerful, broad-based and concentrated with a smooth texture that caresses the palate. The mid-palate is full-bodied and equally concentrated, paving the way for a lovely long aftertaste. A decidedly delicious and lively wine combining power, concentration, and smoothness! The aftertaste is very long, showcasing great complexity where spices and empyreumatic notes typical of the terroir nicely balance out fruity overtones.

Château Cheval Blanc

Rouge 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Aromatic complexity dominates from the first nose and this wine expresses the elegance brought to it by optimal weather conditions. The significant proportion of Merlot brings particularly intense aromas of red and black fruit. The impressive nose is pure and precise with notes of raspberry, cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant embalmed in balsamic and subtle sweet aromas of pastries. The generosity and complexity of the nose dominate. Clean, pure and precise, this wine is lush and juicy reflecting perfectly the traits of the fresh fruit when it is tasted directly in the vineyard. A full, attractive attack is redolent of the Merlot of this vintage which is unctuous, round and mouth filling. The Cabernet Franc lends a lovely freshness to the mid-palate and gives the wine length on the finish. This wine is both dense and powerful whilst at the same time soft, unctuous and round. Château Canon

Rouge 74% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc.

Barely opened, it escapes from the bottle like a sweet summer scent... Ripe and expressive, bursting with life, the wine plunges into the glass in which bright notes of red fruit, lush strawberries and raspberries, spin around each other. A few more swirls of the glass and the fruit intensifies even further, allowing aromas of morello cherry burst forth. There is this constant sensation of sapidity, so smooth and tasty. It speaks to us of the mastery achieved in a year that was nevertheless hot and dry. It brings movement over the palate and invigorates the body. Pale yellow in color with green reflections, the wine has a particularly expressive nose with fine Sauvignon notes. Reserve de la Comtesse

Rouge 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc.

The nose fluctuates between Pauillac sap (cedar, graphite), fruit (ripe strawberry) and flowers (lily of the valley, lilac). Raising expectations of a rich and juicy palate. Unsurprisingly, we find the same impressions in the mouth. Long and sappy, the wine is velvety, held taut by a lovely acidity and driven by an almost physical sensation of tannin. The red fruits (strawberry, cherry) are combined with sandalwood and cedar, a confirmation of the Pauillac terroir.
