2020 heralded as part of "a trio of great vintages!” was in general another superlative vintage but one still should not generalize and should still consider at the level of the individual vineyards as it was not a homogeneous vintage.
Production was down on average 10% versus the average, however in some cases it was down as much 20% to 40% versus 2019. This was due in part to frost in March, downy mildew thanks to a long, moist spring and the small size of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc berries augmented by dehydration in the September heat.
While Merlot excelled on the right bank, Cabernet Franc grown in Saint-Émilion also shone in blends. And there were some great Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines in Pessac Leognan, for example Smith Haut Lafitte. In general, from these regions the alcohol was average to high 14 -14.5 but slightly higher in St Emilion with balanced to refreshing acidity.
In contrast, in the Medoc the wines were lower in alcohol, some below 13%. Nonetheless, there are some outstanding wines from the Médoc, like Mouton Rothschild, that managed to produce amazing wines benefiting no doubt from their gravel soils. While Pontet benefited from letting the grass grow between the rows, to soak up some of the excess water and in both cases avoid dilution, a reminder to focus on the vineyards not the vintage. Though in general the wines from the area are lighter in general giving more elegant wines with captivating fragrances.
However as it is a good vintage, but smaller then average, with smaller quantities then normal released en primeur, combined with an increase in demand following a Covid bounce back and changes in American import duties, it has unfortunately resulted in a higher release price versus 2019 and less availability. The release price increases for the top tier + 20% to 52% versus 2019. On the other hand you need to keep in mind that the prices dropped dramatically in 2019, so in reality if you look at the prices in particular for the first growths they are in fact only slightly ahead of the 2018 vintage and only 2- 4% ahead of the 2016 vintage.

Chateau Haut Brion Blanc
Blanc –71,4% Sauvignon Blanc 28,6% Sémillon
This wine has a beautiful yellow tint. The nose is intense and fruity with notes of citrus and passion fruit. The very ripe sauvignon is very present and confers a lot of complexity. The wine is full on the attack and evolves: fat and comfortable, without pause, towards a fragrant finish. It is a white Château Haut-Brion full of sun and pleasure.
Chateau Haut Brion
Rouge – 42,8% Merlot 39,7% Cabernet Sauvignon 17,5% Cabernet Franc
The color of this Château Haut-Brion is dark red, dazzling. The nose, without fuss, is already complex with fresh and spicy notes at the same time. Agitation confirms the fruit ripeness is fair and without excess. The entry is incredibly tight and precise. The wine asserts itself immediately, with an immediate presence. The evolution is never aggressive, but what a presence in the mouth! The tactile sensations are complemented by the taste, the flavors. The tannins are full, refined, juicy. Very good persistence even once it is no longer in the mouth. The score written by the three grape varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, is incredibly fair and harmonious.
Clarete de Haut Brion
Blanc –74,8% Sémillon 25,2% Sauvignon Blanc
The wine has a beautiful light yellow hue. The first nose is intense and fruity, with pretty notes of peach and quince. The nose is ripe and very slightly woody, toasty. The attack is smooth and tasty. The wine evolves thanks to its dominant Semillon (75%) on a fatty and almost sweet body in the mouth, with southern accents. The finish, with nice bitters, is very refreshing.
Chateau La Mission Haut Brion
Rouge – 48,6% Merlot 43,2% Cabernet Sauvignon 8,2% Cabernet Franc
A beautiful dark purple hue. The first nose is intense and fascinating, full of red fruit aromas, with ripe and fresh notes simultaneously. Swirling the wine confirms the fruity, captivating powerfulness, enhanced by a superb woody, spicy hint. The first taste is round, fleshy and thick. The wine develops on a tightly-knit, juicy sensation on the palate, almost sweet, with full-body. It stretches out in length with an elegant presence of tannin, rich in taste and full of pleasure on the finish. This is a superb Château La Mission Haut-Brion, its blend well- balanced and representative of the grape varieties planted in its vineyard.

Blanc – 54,7% Sauvignon blanc 45,3% Sémillon
The colour is beautiful, a pale yellow. The first nose is aromatic and powerful, with really lovely scents of white peach and apricot flesh revealed when swirling the wine. On the palate, the wine gives a rich first taste, very ample. Then development on the palate is generous, rich in taste and superb fruity flavours. The finish on a slightly lemony hint gives a marvellous, slight touch of salinity. Sauvignon, in majority in the blend (55%) of this Château La Mission Haut-Brion white, brings superb acidity, given the context of the summer of 2020, without overriding the Sémillon. The balance between body, acidity and aromatics is achieved particularly well.

Blanc – 90 % Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris, 5 % Sémillon
The wine is pale yellow. The nose is already very expressive with notes of yellow fruits (peach, apricot), white flowers (acacias, orange blossom), and a beautiful elegance of citrus fruits. The attack on the palate is perfectly balanced with a nice tension. The wine then appears ample, broad, dense with a velvety texture, and the acidity takes over the leadership on a very long finish with great minerality. The aromatic on the palate is similar to the one on the nose with yellow fruits, floral notes, and we perceive a greater complexity with more mineral, spicy notes while flint stones give the signature of our great terroir. The color of the wine is dark red, almost black with blueish hues. Very expressive on the nose with red fruits and black fruits flavors. A good swirl in the glass release a large range of flavors and spice. Star anis, liquorice as well as empyreumatic notes and flint stones from the günzien gravels It goes very wide and powerful on the palate at first, then the well-defined structure and smoothness of the wine gives it all its balance, fresh and full body. The length is highlighted by a great tannic structure (from the cabernets which were really outstanding this year), coated with the body of very ripe merlots. Quite the contrary, this richness actually elongates the palate with notes of ripe fruit, raspberries and morello cherries. It also has this long, precise salinity to it which structures the finish. A lively, mineral touch from the limestone plateau adds the finishing touches and brings the wine’s freshness back to the forefront.

All the ingredients are there to allow an excellent ageing in the cellar for the more patient wine lovers too.

Rouge– 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
The wine displays a unique profile: the balance and aromatics of a fresh vintage are accompanied by an acidity and a quality of tannins usually observed in warmer vintages. Goulée by Cos d’Estournel 2020, carried by the richness of the Merlot, is essentially delectable, and marked by notes reminiscent of salty sea breezes and a black pepper touch that lend it a great energy.
Blanc – 95% Sémillon, 4% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Muscadelle
This is an extremely delicate vintage. The first tastings reveal a particularly fresh wine, marked by floral notes of lily of the valley and grapefruit flowers. The liveliness on the palate is typical of our Barsac terroir.
Chateau Chasse Spleen
Rouge – 49 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 42 % Merlot, 6.5 % Petit Verdot & 2.5 % Cabernet Franc
Dark Burgundy. Bright and clear. Aromas of black pepper, candied tangerine peel, blackberry. In mouth, an enveloping fat volume, very fine tannins. Good balance. Soft, onctuous wine, light roasted notes with a discreet scent of vanilla. Final of blackberry jelly.
