Masseto 2015 release

by Pieroth Japan

Dear Valued Partner,

The much awaited Masseto 2015 vintage is now ready to make its international debut!
The overall growing conditions of this vintage were excellent, leading us to believe that Masseto 2015 will be a most coveted wine and one that will continue to give pleasure in many years to come.
The vineyard benefitted from the magical elements which come into play each year. The climate, the presence of the blue clay in the soils, the interaction of the marine influence and the constant, tender care of our workers.
The development of the vines until the summer was very regular but a very hot, dry July risked a temporary shut-down in their ripening. But luck would have it that cooler temperatures & some rain came in mid-August, enabling the grapes to conclude ripening at their own pace and under the best conditions.
Axel Heinz (Winemaker & Estate Director) recollects just how the marine influence was fundamental in all this - producing cooler sea breezes and a magnified intensity of light, especially towards the end of the day, - which accompanied the grapes to a perfect ripening and ensured ideal temperatures during harvest.
We pay tribute to the sea’s unique influence on Masseto in this presentation.
In stylistic terms, the wine shows great class and that ever magical balance between power and elegance. An impressive Masseto born from a great vintage – sumptuous and silky. Decisively Mediterranean in character.
We hope you enjoy this vintage as much as we have enjoyed being part of its creation and we thank you for your continued support which is precious to us.

With kind regards,
Alexandra Belson

Compared to a rather particular 2014, the 2015 proved to be an almost ‘text book’ vintage. After a rainy and mild winter, with just a few days of temperatures below zero, budbreak arrived on time during the first days of April. Spring was characterized by dry and sunny weather, providing ideal conditions for regular vegetative growth that culminated in a quick and complete flowering at the end of May. From June on, water stress gradually became evident. July will be remembered as a particularly torrid, dry month, with maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C every single day of the month. The heat, combined with the absence of rains, made us fear a shut-down in the ripening and the need for an early harvest. Luckily rain fell abundantly around 10 August that not only unblocked the ripening but also brought much cooler temperatures during the final ripening phase. This cool, yet sunny, weather continued throughout the harvest, allowing us to pick the grapes with great ease, choosing just the right moment to harvest the different vineyard blocks, resulting in a fresh and lively aromatic quality with a perfect degree of phenolic ripeness along with abundant, yet silky and soft, tannins. The harvest began on 29 August with the youngest vines and finished on the 16 September with the last portions of “Masseto Centrale”.

The bunches, hand harvested in 15kg crates, were carefully sorted by hand on a double sorting table before and after destemming and then subjected to a gentle crushing. Six different lots were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in both steel and wood tanks, followed by 15-20 days maceration at a temperature between 25 and 30° C. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation took place in 100% new oak barrique, and the different lots were kept separate for the first 12 months of maturation. The wine was then blended and reintroduced into the barrels for another year, making a total of 24 months. After bottling, the wine was aged for an additional 12 months prior to release.

The particularly regular vintage, along with an ideal temperature during the harvest, is reflected in a classic Masseto, with a perfect balance between a mature, yet complex, aromatic expression of great freshness and a rare quality of ample, silky and smooth tannins. The dark and intense colour is followed by a rich aroma with hints of fully ripe red fruit and spicy, balsamic and cocoa notes. In the mouth it becomes sensual and rich, with great density and an ample and perfectly smooth tannin. The fruity notes are underlined by the subtle presence of oak - terminating in a fresh and vivid finish with pronounced hints of cocoa.

by Pieroth Japan
After a record in sales of Ornellaia wines during our last custom import, Pieroth Japan is proud to have been selected by Ornellaia as one of the few strategic partners/importers to distribute their wonderful wines in Japan. "The entire team of Ornellaia would like to thank you once again for your unfailing commitment and support."
A great thank you to the Frescobaldi family, Ornellaia e Masseto 's winemaker and Estate Director Axel Heinz, Masseto's General Manager Alex Belson and Patrick Lachapele export manager for this memorable visit, the great Ornellaia and Masseto wines served during the tasting, dinner and lunch.
Ornellaia is an Italian wine producer in the DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, known as a producer of Super Tuscan wine. Ornellaia is considered one of Italy's leading Bordeaux-style red wines. The estate also produces a second wine, Le Serre Nuove, the blend Le Volte, the Merlot varietal labeled wine Masseto, in addition to estate production of grappa and olive oil. In 2012, the winery's name was changed from "Tenuta dell'Ornellaia" to "Ornellaia e Masseto", in recognition of the increasing importance of the Merlot-based wine.
Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the section of the Northern Maremma between Livorno and the island of Elba. The vineyards extend over two adjacent areas that are separated by Bolgheri's famed Cypress Avenue. There are 99 hectares of vineyards in all, 41 surrounding the Tenuta, and the remaining 58 in an area known as Bellaria, which is closer to the sea. The vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 50 to 120 meters above sea level, on slopes ranging from 5 to 20°. Planting density per hectare ranges from 5,000 vines per hectare in the older vineyards of the Estate to 7,000 vines per hectare in the Bellaria vineyards. By comparison, some of the most recent vineyards can have up to 8,700 vines per hectare. Ornellaia's 97 hectares of vineyards are divided into 50 parcels planted to the four varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (38 hectares), Cabernet Franc (12 hectares), Merlot (38 hectares), Petit Verdot (7 hectares), and varieties Sauvignon blanc (2,5 ha), Viognier (0.5 ha) and Petit Manseng (1 ha).

2017 Le Grand Tasting Tokyo Report -2nd edition-

by Pieroth Japan

Accompanying the amateur in the pleasure of tasting, bettane+desseauve have been showcasing their very personal selection of growers since 2005 throughout a series of national and international editions of Le Grand Tasting in Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai and - for the 2nd edition - Tokyo in late November in the prestigious setting of Gajoen Hotel.

In partnership with Pieroth (a leader in Japan with a sales team of over 520 people and more than 200.000 and 35.000 active customers in the respective sectors of B2C and B2B) the second edition of Le Grand Tasting Tokyo further confirmed its success with a very positive feedback from both exhibitors and visitors.

Over 5.100 visitors (+24% vs 2016) - 3 days event

69 producers from all over the world - 23 wine regions represented.

Ultimate meet the winemakers experience.

With 69 exhibitors featuring a rare worldwide selection (Argentina, Austria, Chile, France, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and USA), Le Grand Tasting Tokyo sets itself apart from any other wine event. This 2nd edition matched the original concept of other bettane+desseauve events: Le Grand Tasting is a wine festival where the best wines can be tasted, and the trade buyers and visitors have the chance to meet the people that make them.

Only wines selected by bettane+desseauve can take part in this event:
the French and international excellence in the same place. Visitors made no mistake; their quotes speak for themselves.

A large attendance with substantial business figures

Over 5.100 visitors attended this three days event, Pieroth customers were the largest contingent yet Le Grand Tasting Tokyo also attracted new visitors and press thanks to the large marketing campaign (Google, Yahoo, Peatix, Groupon, social media …) held prior to the event. The increasing number of trade visitors (552 in 2017, +134% vs 2016) is yet another evidence Le Grand Tasting is rapidly setting up as a prime wine event in Japan.

Besides this large attendance, on site orders reached over 32.000 bottles:

Le Grand Tasting Tokyo is a serious business event wrapped in a high-class package. Throughout this festival, dedicated salesmen offered customers tailor made services helping them out selecting wines upon their criteria or revealing new ones. Newcomers to the Japanese market had the chance to present their wines to the public whilst a significant number of them were selected by Pieroth Japan with subsequent orders and possible listing to the portfolio.

Interactive and exclusive master classes program

Further to the event, Thierry Desseauve stated: “the number and quality of the visitors, their passion for fine wines and the interaction with the winemakers reminded me of Le Grand Tasting Paris atmosphere. We wished to set Le Grand Tasting Tokyo as the reference event for wine lovers and this second edition makes us feel we’re pretty much on track”

With all due respect; the exclusive program of master classes featured top labels and guests of honor such as Philippe Dhalluin (Château Mouton Rothschild) or Hervé Berland (Château Montrose) who both flew on purpose to deliver insightful speeches to the happy few joining top notch tasting experiences.

Yet the master classes were also meant to thrill or unveil hidden gems to the audience, the very positive response is another evidence of Japanese public’s strong interest for all matters concerning wine and its culture. Referent intermediary between the great and small growers and the beginner or confirmed amateur, the bettane+desseauve experts offer cultural and technical elements of understanding,

Champagne Taittinger, Château Montrose, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Riedel (see left picture), Sakura Awards, Sena, Toso, Vik …wine is a matter in which knowledge increases pleasure.

Ladies & Gentlemen in Wine Gala Dinners.

During the event, Pieroth Japan hosted the - now famous - Ladies & Gentlemen in Wine dinners: 2 exclusive gala dinners and charity auction events with 564 guests, 66 producers invited, and an astonishing 8.306.520 JPY raised in 2 days for the “Shine On Kids” Foundation.
