Château Ausone

In the 4th century, the slope of Ausone was one of the first in the area to be planted with vines. According to tradition Chateau Ausone stands on the site of the villa of the Roman poet Ausonius. Ausonius who lived between 320 A.D. and 395 A.D. was also known to have had a vineyard in the area. The chateau has impressive wine cellars which are cut into the hillside close by the chateau, under a cemetery.
It is said that chateau Ausone, the top growth of St-Emilon during the 1855 classification would have been included in this classification, as Haut-Brion was if the production had not been so small (it was about 8 tonneaux at the time ). The steep vineyards with its perfect exposure and protection from adverse winds is filled with very old gnarled vines, and contains a soil which is a mixture of clay and sand on limestone that is unique in the district.
