Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon-Segur is a very old estate situated slightly inland in the northernmost reaches of the commune of St.-Estèphe, making it the most northerly classified growth. It had earned the right to the title of Premier Cru de Saint-Estèphe as early as 1775 being the first wine estate in the commune.

This noble mansion was a Gallo-Roman center, the original Saint-Estèphe village. However its more modern origins can be traced back to the 12th century when the lords of Lesparre gave it to a bishop of Portiers, Monseigneur de Calon. At this time the commune was also referred to as “Calones” after the boats that used to ferry timber across the Gironde, and until the 18th century the area was called either: Saint-Estèphe-de-Calon or Calories. In the 18th century the château belonged to the famous Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur (1697-1755), who acquired ownership through marriage.

At one time the Marquis de Ségur owned Château Lafite, Château Latour, Mouton and Château Calon-Ségur. He said: “I make my wines at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon-Segur” Hence the label which makes it very popular on St. Valentines day. In fact it was the marquis who changed the name of the Château, originally known as Calon to Calon-Segur.

According to local legend, Louis XV is said to have dubbed him the Prince des Vignes, after being told that the (apparently diamond) buttons of his coat were the precious stones of his vineyard, cut and polished.

The vineyard is beautifully situated, and is largely encircled by an old stone wall. The château is one of the finest in the region, with distinctive, squat towers and cloister-like entrance by the chais.
