J. Wilkes

Welcome to J. Wilkes. I am dedicated to producing only small lots of handcrafted wines that have extraction while maintaining the natural delicacy of the grapes.   Over the past two decades, I ’ve developed strong relationships with growers along California’s central coast and Napa Valley. I have searched out the finest vineyards that produce naturally balanced vines that require a minimum of manipulation to achieve vine balance and low yields. By knowing the growers and their vineyard sites, I am able to pick and choose to find not only the best vineyards, but also the best sites within each vineyard. These sites are destined to produce grapes for the wines that bear the J. Wilkes name.

I am always experimenting with new and better ways to create wines of distinction. I love what I do and am proud of the wines I offer. I hope you enjoy them, and welcome your comments.

Cheers,
Jeff Wilkes

J. Wilkes - A New Beginning
The roots of our new beginning actually took hold in 1984. I had just accepted a position with Bien Nacido Vineyards to help market the grapes produced there during one of the largest grape gluts in California history. I was reviewing the wines produced from the vineyard and tasted the only red wine produced from Bien Nacido-grown Pinot Noir. Most of the Bien Nacido Pinot Noir was made into sparkling wine at that time. However, the 1982 Austin Cellars Bien Nacido Pinot Noir had just been released and not only did I feel that Pinot Noir was the future for Bien Nacido but I knew this was my future.

During my 18 years at BNV, my goal was to make Bien Nacido recognized as one of the premier Pinot Noir vineyards in the country. Along with the marketing and sales of the grapes, I focused on improving farming techniques and upgrading the trellises. I spent a lot of time on the road visiting other vineyards throughout the state. I looked at what other vineyards were doing, tasted the resulting wines and then brought this research back so that we could take advantage of the best techniques around. During this time, I tasted the best Pinot's from Bien Nacido, as well as from all over California and France. Because I was spending untold hours visiting wineries and talking with winemakers, I developed a real sense of how I wanted to produce wine.

In 2001, I decided to venture out with the goal of making world class wines. We also wanted to produce a white wine so I added a Pinot Blanc from Bien Nacido in 2004.

Our promise to you is that J. Wilkes will always produce small, handcrafted lots of the finest grapes into wines of distinction. By sourcing grapes from carefully selected sites and then using a combination of modern and traditional winemaking techniques, J. Wilkes wines will continue to show the best characteristics of traditional Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.

The must was pressed at 0 degrees brix and the wines were settled and then barreled down. Primary fermentation completed at the end of one month in barrel. At that time, malolactic fermentation started spontaneously and finished after about two months. The wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 16 months prior to bottling.

To enhance the fruit characteristics in the resulting wine, the fermenter was kept cold. Fermentation began slowly and lasted about seventeen days. During this time the wine was punched down twice daily. The must was pressed at dryness and the wines were settled and then barreled down. At that time, the wine was inoculated for malolactic fermentation which finished after about one month. The wine was aged for 10 months in French oak then bottled in July 2006.

2005 Bien Nacido Vineyards Pinot Blanc

Vineyard:
Bien Nacido Vineyards is located on south facing slopes in the Santa Maria Valley and is recognized as one of the premier vineyards in California. This 2005 Pinot Blanc was produced from grapevines located in Block D, which is known for well-drained, sandy loam soils. This block was planted using true Pinot Blanc scion material sourced by Foundation Plant Materials Services in Davis from an Italian vineyard.

Winemaking:
The grapes were harvested in September at a sugar content of 24.7 degrees brix. The 2005 harvest was about slightly above average size with a yield in the vineyard of 4.1 tons per acre. The grapes were machine harvested at night ensure the fruit would be delivered cold for pressing.
At the winery, the grapes were pressed, without de-stemming, and the juice was placed in a tank for settling. After 48 hours, the juice was racked to a white wine fermenter and inoculated with yeast. The fermentation was kept cold to maintain the fruit character of the grapes. At the completion of primary fermentation, the tank was chilled and SO2 was added to stop malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was left to age sur lies until shortly before bottling on April 10, 2006.
