Château Figeac

CHATEAU-FIGEAC, 1st Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion, offers the elegance and the refinement of the greatest Bordeaux wines. The estate’s location is remarkable, as are its outstanding terroir and its history, which is inextricably linked to that of Saint-Emilion. Its origins date back to the 2nd century AD and the FIGEACUS family, who gave the estate its name. The Manoncourt family, which has owned the estate for over 120 years, has shaped the unique character of Chateau Figeac, with a vineyard composed of 35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, which is totally unusual in Saint-Emilion .

This fine property adjoins Cheval Blanc which once formed a part of its estates before 1789, after which time the Chateau was split up among the family. In fact the wine produced from what is now known as Cheval Blanc was once sold as Vin de Figeac. In the neighborhood there are a number of other Chateaus which were able to adopt the name Figeac. These are also a result of the division of the property.

For example La Tour-Figeac, split off from Figeac itself in 1879 which was subdivided into three, of which the original chateau retained 16 ha. The other two parts were both called La Tour-du-Pin-Figeac, each with a vineyard area of about 8 ha.However of all the Figeac chateaux the ‘Chateau Figeac’ is the best and it probably produces the second best wine of St.-Emilion’s. In being compared to the Medoc classification it would probably rate as a second-growth.
