This chateau is located next to Latour and comprises of only half the original domaine. The original domaine consisted of Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases, Chateau Leoville-Poyferre & Chateau Leoville-Barton. It was originally known as Mont-Moytie. M.Moytie, a merchant of Bordeaux had created the estate in 1638. Then a century later it was re-named after another president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, M. Leoville who died in 1769. As a whole, it was at one stage the most important estate not only in St Julien but also in the Medoc. Now Chateau Leoville-Las Cases represents only half the original estate and runs from the village of St. Julien to Latour. The original chateau standing at the southern entrance to the village is actually divided between Las-Cases and Poyferre. This chateau is very highly rated and possibly would be upgraded to a first growth if there was a reclassification.
The owners are totally committed to producing the best quality wines. An example of their total dedication can be seen in the fact that they declassified over 50% of their crop in an abundant vintages such as 1986, or even 67% in 1990.
The owners have spared no expense in producing these wines even installing marble floors in the air-conditioned chai.
