Sequoia Grove Vineyards

Sequoia Grove is named after the stately redwoods towering above its century-old winery, a rustic barn dating from the 1860’s. Although the old barn turned winery beneath the redwoods sill stands as a symbol of Sequoia Grove’s proud wine-making tradition, a state-of-the-art facility was completed on the estate in the spring of 1987, which included the first underground cellar in the Napa Valley.

It is believed that property’s boundary lies within the area known as the “Rutherford Bench”. The distinctive soil types of the Rutherford Bench extend roughly from the western foothills of the valley just north of the village of Rutherford south to Oakville.

Sequoia Grove’s innovativeness is also evidenced in its building the first completely underground cellar in the floor of Napa Valley. This cellar provides the perfect conditions for the aging of their wines. Facing a great deal of skepticism due to the high water table in the Napa Valley they persisted and the result was an underground facility which brings their wines even closer to its European counterparts. The Cellar enables them to store the wines at a perfect 12.5 and a constant humidity, while not having to sacrifice valuable vineyard acreage or expense on artificial cooling systems.
